Description

Grocery shopping with a horse-drawn sleigh in downtown Guilford after a 1934 snow storm. A massive coastal storm hit eastern Connecticut on Tuesday, February 20, 1934. After the storm, William Dudley took Clapboard Hill women downtown to pick up groceries.

This was an extremely snowy winter, and the month of February was the coldest since records had been kept in 1871, with an average of 17.4 degrees (according to Goldstein’s Connecticut Climate Book).
